Roanoke Children's Theatre raises awareness on mental health in teens
The Roanoke Children's Theatre is making a difference with its latest production "Eric and Elliot."
Educating middle schoolers on mental health issues such as depression.
The Roanoke Children's Theathre says local research shows one in four local teenagers is suffering from depression or severe depression.
The students watch the play and then they have mental health professionals paying attention to maybe which student the topic is really striking a chord with.
Theatre leaders say this is very important subject.
"You just assume their happy and everybody is connected in more ways than ever with texting and facebook you'd think wow they've got it made, it's not true and it may be part of the problem," said Pat Wilhelms, Play Director.
"Social media can be a positive, but it also is something that can very easily get kids caught up in bullying, very easily get kids saying things they may not have said to other kids face to face," Nancy Hans, Prevention Council Director.
The play opened to the public Thursday night at the Taubman Museum of Art, so families could bring their children and start their own discussion.
There are other shows Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
